Music News - July 2019

Tony Treglown-14-800The choir sang at five services during May and covered works by composers dating from 1548 to the present day. On Sunday 9th June was the SMMA Festal Evensong. I’m not sure quite when the tradition of holding this began, but certainly a great many years ago! This year’s preacher was our Parish Assistant, Charles Cowper, who has sung with the choir on a number of occasions during his year with us. The readings were read by the newest members of the SMMA Committee, Hannah Razzell and James Marsh. The responses were by Ayleward, with Final Responses by Rose (a rehearsal for our forthcoming visit to Coventry in July!) The Canticles were Ireland’s setting in F and the anthem was our very first performance of Sumsion’s ‘They that go down to the sea in ships’. The choir has really enjoyed learning this addition to our repertoire and it certainly involved some virtuoso playing by Jeremy! The final voluntary was Procession (op. 17 no.4) by Hill.

We recently had the first of this year’s organ recitals which was given by Anne Page, who is based in Cambridge. She is an international recitalist and teaches many of the Cambridge college organ scholars. The program was carefully thought out to show the organ off to its maximum and was excitingly played. It was a shame that more people didn’t come. If you haven’t tried it before, come to one of the other four this summer - you may well enjoy it! The next one will be on Saturday 29th June at 7.30 p.m. when Jeremy Allen, our very own highly talented Assistant Organist, will be playing for us. Do come along and bring your friends. Oliver King will also be giving a recital on Saturday 20th July at 3 p.m. so another opportunity to enjoy a great programme: we are so lucky to have two such talented organists in-house!

The lunchtime concert series is in full swing – by the time this goes to press we will still have concerts featuring young musicians from Saffron Walden County High School on 26th June, St Mary’s Brass Quintet (3rd July), Anna le Hair (piano) and Arwen Newband (violin) on 10th July before the series ends on 17th July with Diana Hoy (contralto) accompanied by Wendy Watts on the piano.

The choir is looking forward to singing Evensong in Coventry Cathedral on 13th July. We usually have a cathedral visit each year, with an extended residential visit planned every three or so years. If any supporters wish to come on the coach, I believe there may still be seats available (£20) so do please get in touch.

The Juniors have been busy with Family Services in May and June, an informal concert in June, preparing for another Family Service in July and a visit on their own to sing the morning service at Hadstock Parish Church on July 7th – as well as the Coventry trip of course!

The brass group are also planning a visit out – they will be playing at Sewards End Fete on Saturday 29th June.

Just another busy time musically at St Mary’s……
