St Mary’s has welcomed visitors, worshippers and pilgrims for hundreds of years. To make our welcome better for the 21st century and beyond, we are undertaking building and heating projects that will respect St Mary’s amazing heritage whilst providing facilities that are appropriate for modern lives.

We’ve already upgraded the heating in the church, provided designated spaces for wheelchair users in the nave and provided additional space and more flexible seating around the font.
We have also created a servery so we can provide hot drinks and other refreshments so we can offer better hospitality at regular services and special events and have installed a discreet, accessible toilet at the back of the church.
We are now working on the later phases of the Buildings Project which will involve:
Relocating and restoring the tomb of Thomas Audley to repair centuries of wear and tear and to make this significant historical feature more accessible to visitors.
Upgrading the clergy and choir vestries.
We want St Mary’s to flourish in its important role as the parish church for the town of Saffron Walden: to be at the heart of community life and to be an attractive place for visitors, too.
Support our project
To realise this vision, we need to raise a further £175,000. We are very grateful for everyone’s generosity to date. We will continue to pursue a number of grant applications and fund raising events. Please support these events and give generously. If you wish to make a donation please use one of the yellow envelopes from the pews and mark it ‘Building Fund’ and place it in the blue safe at the west door, or contact us.
If you are a UK taxpayer, we can also claim Gift Aid of 25p in every £1 you donate, whether as a single gift or by standing order.
